St Pauli is offsides

By: Mike | April 24th, 2009

Welcome to the brand new St Pauli section of the offside.

For those who aren’t familiar with the team, St Pauli plays it’s home matches in the St Pauli district of Hamburg. What the team lacks in trophies, they more than make up for in spirit.

As my first bit of news straight out of Hamburg, we have this:
The Ultras St Pauli, going against their anarchist ethos, have recently copyrighted their now famous and oft-copycatted song “We Love you.” They’ve begun sending out RIAA style cease and desist orders against other supporters (We’re looking at you, just about every MLS supporters group…) singing the song.

Unless they buy me a beer, then we’re all square.

On to real news- Today’s match up against SC Frieberg, which starts up in a half hour. I’ll be saving this game for tonight to watch with the New York St Pauli supporters, but a full report, and even more news, will follow.

I’ve had a bit of a soft spot for St. Pauli ever since I saw the team at Frankfurt train station once. I suppose it was probably one of the youth teams or something, but it tickled me that they took the train like the rest of us plebs.

And despite the fact that Freiburg is a lovely little city, I’ve hated their team ever since I got stuck on the Regionalbahn with a bunch of their drunken fans singing ‘Wir sind Freiburger Jungs’ for three hours ad nauseum.

So based solely on train related experiences, I hope St. Pauli win this one.

Good stuff Jones. It might have been the full side, we’re not quite the richest team ever. A couple years ago we were floundering in the 3rd division thanks to money issues.

Thankfully, all that seems to be behind us.

I have to admit I really thought the Sankt Pauli Ultras were sending copyright nastygrams around the world! Sometimes I can be a little slow on the uptake…
