St Pauli end the season on a high note

By: Mike | May 24th, 2009

St Pauli defeated FSV Frankfurt by the score of 2 – 0 this afternoon in Hamburg, ending the 2008-2009 season on a high note. The boys in brown never looked worried as Ebbers lead the way with a brace. Although only symbolic in nature, the victory was well deserved for this team, who met expectations this year.

The face of the team will change for next season. Midfielders Filip Trojan (Mainz) and Bjorn Brunnemann (Union Berlin) were seen off after the match, receiving flowers, a picture, and warm applause from the home fans. This team is largely the same as the one that saw the team rise from the dark ages of play in what was then the Regional 3rd tier of German football. Certainly the face of the midfield will change for next year.

For St Pauli, finishing 8th in the second bundesliga is a fair result for the season. Though promotion would’ve been spectacular, it’s the opinion of many that another season in the second bundesliga was needed in order for more growth to be had. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will St Pauli, although it’s the dream of all to beat HSV. For now, we’ll have to settle for beating Hansa Rostock.

Cheers for the good season, FC St Pauli. I’ll be posting important summer news as it comes up. Look on the bright side, there’s really only a 2 month break, as the season normally starts in August, and they’ll be preseason tournaments and friendlies to talk about before then.
