St Pauli comes back to win 3-2
By: Mike | September 14th, 2009The magical start to the season continued on against FSV Frankfurt. Though, St Pauli did not look nearly as convincing as in Aachen and Karlsruher, 3 points is still 3 points.
St Pauli certainly didn’t wait to get the game started. It took only around 40 seconds for Marius Ebbers to strike, courtesy of a nice cross from Takyi. This goal was particularly significant as it was the team’s 1000th goal in the Second Bundesliga. Dreams of another 4 or 5 nil beamed through the minds of those in white, however Frankfurt had other ideas.
Just 2 minutes later, Cenci of FSV Frankfurt found the ball at his feet at the top of the box and made no mistake, slotting it away into the left corner of the net. St Pauli was further unsettled in the 18th minute, when St Pauli defender Ralph Gunesch unluckily cleared a cross into his own goal, putting St Pauli in a rather unusual position this season: Losing a game on the road. And to the concern of the supporters, St Pauli struggled to grab a hold of the game for the rest of the first half and into the start of the 2nd half as well.
The away supporters didn’t seem overly concerned throughout this spell, though it might have been the free beer they were treated to by FSV Frankfurt. You might remember that the last game of last season was a match at home verse FSV. Even though St Pauli were victorious, results elsewhere gaurenteed FSV would not be relegated. After the match, St Pauli and FSV fans partied together in Hamburg. FSV thanked St Pauli fans the best way possible: Free beer.
In the 69th minute, just as was looking that the result would settle in, St Pauli found a spark, again in the form of the speedy Tayki. He took a through ball, put a great touch to round the keeper, and an even better one to finish the play, pulling St Pauli level. From then, St Pauli was able to control the game better, leading to Matthias Lehmann finding the winning goal in the 75th minute, a great strike from 15 yards out.
The rest of the match, St Pauli handled well, leading up to the party afterwards, celebrating the 3 points, which kept us on top of the table on goal differential.
