FC St. Pauli takes extra time to advance in the cup

FC St Pauli had a bit of trouble with tiny FC Villingen 08, but Deniz Naki saved the day with a brace in extra time to put the boys in… red? … through into the next round of the German Pokal.

St Pauli took it’s fair time warming to the task of the first competative fixture of the season. The first half was largely controlled by FC Villingen, who mustered 3 shots to St Pauli’s lone effort by Florian Bruns. The dismal play lead to an angry tirade by head coach Holder Stanislawski.

The second half ended up going almost as poorly as the first. The only saving grace was the defense holding strong and not conceding a goal, which would’ve sent St Pauli spiraling out of the game and the cup. The game instead ended 0:0 at full time, sending the game into extra time.

At the death of the first overtime period, young Deniz Naki found the goal to put St Pauli in a lead. The boys in red never looked back, and Naki scored at the death of the game to secure a 2-0 win to St Pauli.

None-the-less, manager Stanislawski was thoroughly unimpressed with the game. He surmised it was St Pauli’s worst game in some time, and recommended immediate improvement for this weekend’s game against RW Ahlen. Video highlights and news later in the week.

Seems like a step back for the Boys in Brown but a win is a win is a win is a win.
